It is formed when a tiny foreign object enters the body of an oyster. In defense action, the oyster secretes layers of nacre (conchiolin) around the foreign object which isolates the intruder in concentric circles. This layered nacre becomes a pearl over a period of time. All other gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds, etc. are formed in the Earth’s crust as magma cools under high pressure.
Natural pearls are unique and one of the rarest jewels on the planet since less than 1 in every 10,000 wild oysters contain pearls.

Therefore, man can create a pearl, however, they cannot influence the colour or the quality of a pearl. Hence, the large and perfectly round cultured pearls with high lustre are rare and expensive. The quality of the pearls is also greatly influenced by the quality and temperature of the water.
The cultivation of pearls is a highly complex and time-taking process. In all cases, it takes at least six months to produce a pearl. However, it can take several years to cultivate depending on the variety of pearl.

Pearls differ a great deal in size, shape, colour, texture and lustre. Generally, the cultured pearls are polished to enhance their lustre.
The cultured pearls which are slightly spotted are bleached, whereas the white cultured pearls can also be coloured grey, brown or yellow. Freshwater pearls can come in a variety of shapes and colors.
Freshwater pearls come in various natural shapes such as oval, round, button, coin, square, potato, etc. Most popular and naturally occurring colors include white, pink, and lavender while the rarer colors include blue and green.
