What is Laser Hair Removal?
Laser Hair Removal is one of the most successful methods of unwanted hair removal on different parts of the body. The principle of functioning of the module is photothermolysis. This means that the energy supplied by the machine turns into heat that affects particular carrying pigments structures without influencing any other ones. Melanin in the hair is the pigment the procedure is aimed at. It is attacked by the energy ray and thus the hair and its follicle are destroyed by the heat. The surrounding skin is not affected.
The skin is cleaned before the procedure. It is necessary to shave the hair before doing the procedure but not when bleaching with laser. Some gel is applied on the cleaned area and the tip of the instrument gets in contact with the treated skin. An energy impulse is released after that. The surface of the tip is large enough to treat several hair follicles at the same time. The whole area is treated in this way. The procedure is absolutely safe. A cooling device on the tip of the instrument protects the treated area from getting burnt.
The procedure takes from a few minutes to several hours depending on the size of the treated area. It may be a little painful but the pain is bearable. Immediately after the procedure the skin is red and slightly swollen. This discomfort disappears within several hours or, sometimes, several days.
What you should know before the procedure?
Laser Hair Removal does not require any special preparation of the skin. Nevertheless, a preliminary consultation with a dermatologist is recommended with regard to discussing the type of skin, the aim of treatment and the expected results. For more effective result, the hair on the area that will be treated should be shaved or cut very short on the day before the procedure. By no means should the hairs be plucked as melanin should stay in the hair follicles and thus both structures will be destroyed. The plucking of hair will not allow the follicles to be destroyed.
Contraindication to the treatment: use of, system retinoids, oral contraceptives, dermabrasion, pregnancy, herpes virus infection as well as an active inflammation process.
At least a month before and after the treatment, sun exposure (both natural sunlight and solarium) has to be avoided because melanin is stored in the skin as a safeguard reaction against Ultra Violet rays. The instrument cannot distinguish this protective pigment from the pigment in the hair so the skin may get burnt and hyper pigmentation may occur after that during the procedure. For the same reason, laser is not performed in summer. After the treatment the skin becomes more sensitive to ultra-violet rays. Therefore, it is necessary to apply daily sunscreen products every second or third hour within a month after the procedure.
Results of the procedure
Both systems alexandite noblex and diode laser provide effective, fast and long-lasting removal of the unwanted hair on different part of the body regardless of gender, the degree of pigmentation of the skin, the density and the thickness of hair. The reason is that the instruments make it possible to choose one out of 600 different combinations of shape, size and density of the rays. The hair on the treated areas will not go down immediately. This will happen within ten days after the procedure.
How many procedures are needed?
It has been proved that the hair on our body goes through several phases during its life cycle. The main ones are anagen (growth phase), catagen (transition phase) and telogen (resting phase). At a particular period, different percentage of hair is in each one of the phases. The procedure is effective only in the phase of growth. This explains why it is not possible to remove all the hair during one procedure. Five or six treatments are usually needed depending on the individual characteristics of the patient’s hair as well as on the type of the treated area.
